Problem with Map not displaying my sites

Symptom: I edited the networks.mxd, and my sites do not show up (or the points disappear when zoomed in).

Solution 1: Most likely the wrong Map file (mxd) is being edited.

To find out what mxd the server is using, open arcCatalog

  1. Expand GIS Servers>hisxx.
    1. Right click connect.
  2. Expand.
  3. Right click on networks, select the service properties.
  4. Click on Parameters. See what Map Document is in use.

Solution 2: Map extents do not cover sites extent.
Another cause could be that the extent of your maps does not cover the extent of your sites. In one DASH deployment, the full extent that was set in the Networks.mxd file did not cover all sites. Any sites that were outside of the full extent did now show up in DASH. If you knew where they were at, you could still click on them and query them, but their point icon wasn't drawn in the map. The solution is to change the extent in DASH.

To change the extent in DASH, see Customizing DASH.

My GIS Server is missing in ArcCatalog

Symptom: I did not find my machine under the node of GIS Servers in ArcCatalog.

Solution: If you log into the machine using a different username than the hisadmin account which was created for you, then you'll have to manually add the ArcGIS server connection. First thought, you'll need to add your username to the "agsadmin" group.

To add your username to the agsadmin group:
  1. Right click on the "My Computer" icon on your desktop (or in Explorer), and click "Manage".
  2. Expand "Local Users and Groups".
  3. Click "Groups".
  4. Double click the "agsadmin" group.
  5. Click "Add" and then type or search for your username.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Log off of the machine and log back in for the security changes to be recognized.

To add the connection in ArcCatalog:
  1. In ArcCatalog, open the GIS Servers group
  2. Double click the "Add ArcGIS server" link
  3. Select "Manage ArcGIS Server" and click Next
  4. Set the server URL to "http://{your machine name}/arcgis/services", e.g. "http://his04/arcgis/services"
  5. Set the server host to {your machine name}, e.g. "his04".
  6. Click Finish.

DASH Takes Too Long to Draw

Symptom: When DASH first loads, or I navigate in the map, it takes a long time for the map to refresh.

Solution: There are a number of ways to enhance performance, by keeping up to date with software releases, and adjusting your map layers.

  • Install the latest ArcGIS Server service packs, available at the ESRI website.
  • Use annotation layers rather than dynamic labels. In particular, symbols that involve overlay of multiple layers are highly recommended to be replaced by annotations, such as interstate/US highway symbols.
  • Use simple labels/symbols if annotation is not used, e.g. no halos around text. Otherwise, it's better to go with annotation.
  • Eliminate unnecessary layers in map.
  • Fine tune the displaying scale range of each layer.
  • Try caching your map.
