The dataset begins at March 1, 2000. The end of the available data will change over time. It usually is 6 months to a year behind.

There is code to modify the service to use NetCDF downloads. Since this downloads a netCDF file to disk, then reads the file, there is no need to update the service.
Modifying this to download the entire file, periodically, and provide values would be a use for the ability to read netcdf files.
